This project looks to put free wifi in the parks. It is currently only available in batery park. It is being delayed because they want someone to front the 30,000 bill.

Wi-Fi Comes to New York Parks

The New York Times today is reporting on the progress of a project to unwire New York City parks, which was announced three years ago. Reportedly by early August of this year 10 of New York’s “most prominent parks” will have Wi-Fi access. The project is being implemented by a small company called WiFi Salon. Mobile handset maker Nokia is now underwriting the project as a sponsor.

Nokia has taken an exceptionally strong interest in mobile-local search and has partnered with yellow pages publishers in several countries to offer local business and entertainment information though its content portal on its handsets.

And though this New York park Wi-Fi offering isn’t mobile-local search per se, it does present the possibility of location-based content and advertising. According to the article, “at each hot spot, users will encounter an initial Web portal with information about the park and local history and advertisements for Nokia and other sponsors, which could include retail kiosks that do business in the parks.”

I found the whole process to be very interesting. While searching for my article I came across lotsof other article that I read just because they peaked my interest. As for the actuall part of leading the small group discussions. I really like to hear peoples feedback about the questions I had developed while I had read my article. Some people seemed to be more interested in the topic than others because I felt like i was just talking to a few people each time in the group. I think finding the outside article and seeing the other one while I wa searching for it helped give me a better understanding of what the reading for the week are about. My favorite thing that I learned from doing this was during one of my groups Jamie talked how the producer from CBS who got fired because of the scandal over the documents that said Bush got off easy in the national guard, came into her class. Although, it did not relate to my article, I had read an article about that as I was finding mine. It generated a nice little discussing that i found to be very interesting. All in all I thought the whole process was not so bad and I think it actually helped me learn a little more

I am researching logo campaigns. Logo campaigns are campaigns where activists will take a familiar logo or brand and attack it. They do this by either altering the image of the logo or presenting information to tarnish their image. I am going to focus mainly on the logo campaign known as the McLibel case. In this case they handed out pamphlets that exaggerated facts about McDonalds which hurt their image. They sued for libel and which resulted in the biggest PR disaster ever.

Jansen, S., Martin, B. (2003). Making Censorship Backfire. Counterpoise (7), 5. Retrieved April 30, 2007, from ProQuest database. (Document ID: 690702391).

b. This article lays out 4 reasons that censorship can back fire on a company or organization. They are “1) the authors of the propaganda may misjudge the psychological state of the audience; 2) different people respond differently to the same message, so some will respond negatively; 3) different themes in a piece of propaganda may send contrary messages; and 4) people’s personal experiences may be contrary to what is portrayed in propaganda, leading them to reject everything that is said.” The authors demonstrate their point by looking at the McLibel case. They then lay out the way in which can prevent attempting to censor critics from backfiring.

c. Even though the part about McDonalds is only a small part of the article, this site will help me understand why a company like McDonalds would want to censor a ogo campaign against them, as well as give me insight into the specific of the Mclibel case.

d. I believe it is scholarly because they have a list of references and footnotes as was said counts in this class, as well as it was found in a journal that was marked as scholarly.

This site will help me understand the protestor’s side of the case. It will give me insight as to how they viewed the process of being censored by McDonalds

I believe this is a popular source because it is from McSpotlight which is a website dedicated to watching McDonalds.

This article lays out first why the judge ruled for McDonalds in this case. It says that the judge ruled against them because in his opinion event he some of what they said was true, much of it was very exaggerated. This article then goes into talking about all the allegations that the green peace protestors proved true in the suit. They were found guilty of rain forest destruction, cruelty to animals, marketing to children, nutritional value, and on labor and union issues.

This site while help me measure the effectiveness of the logo campaign that the protesters were running. Effectiveness being their ability to tarnish the brand name of McDonalds. By looking at was in the pamphlet and what they were able to prove McDonalds was guilty of.

I believe this is a popular source because it come form the center for media and democracy. The article itself is from PR Watch Newsletter, which would be intended for other within the industry to read. It does not have footnote or references lists.

This article also looks at the degree to which reliance on weblogs as a a source of news as well as traditional and online media sources predicts credibility of weblogs. The results were tthat weblog users judged blogs as highly credible, meaning that they are more credible than traditional sources such as tv news and broadcast radio. They did, however, rate traditional sources as moderately credible they just tend to like to seek out information they want and therefore view that as credible

Blogging is going to have major impacts on the established media. Newspapers and evening news never have discussions. They frequently only present one side of a story, and rarely do they allow for a public discussion of an issue. That is where the blogosphere is different. It is a place that allows any average person to not only voice their opinions but they also get to see what other people think about their ideas. There will be no more of this one sidedness that we find in the media today. Now anyone can be come a journalist with blogs

This leads to the discussion, which we had a few weeks ago about credibility. How do you know if what someone says is true? Many of the main stories get their start on a blog somewhere, like in the first reading. But in the second reading there were comments made at the bottom of the page. Do these peoples opinion really matter or is there information credible at that. Think that people will eventually steer away from print media, but will need to have some source of credible news.

I know newspapers are being forced to go online to get readers, shouldn’t they be pushing for only online because that would save them tons of money on print costs?

What would the impact of only online news, be on the actual content of the news, would it have to be geared towards a younger generation?

    3. What will be the role of journalist in the future be, if blogging because the new media, because with blogs anyone is a journalist?
